Description
Reissue of the Collector's Edition dedicated to LeRoy Grannis , now out of print, this book brings together his The most intense surf photography , from the perfect San Onofre wave to Oahu's famous North Shore. A major photographer in the history of surfing , Grannis also immortalized the emerging surf culture , from "surfer stomps" to hordes of fans crowding the beaches during surf competitions, to board-laden "woody breaks" along the Pacific Coast Highway.
Although LeRoy Grannis took up surfing at age 14 with a nearly two-meter pine board, it wasn't until he was 42 that he took to the water with his camera and made a career out of it. Doctors recommended he find a hobby, Grannis built a darkroom in his garage and began photographing surfers in Hermosa Beach, selling them for $1 each. His photos soon appeared in emerging surf magazines, and "Photo: Grannis" quickly established itself as a staple of 1960s California surfing. Grannis, one of the sport's greatest documentarians, was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 1966. He died on February 3, 2011.
